What we carried with us...

Here's a neat little pile of all our gear - everything we carried when we set off apart from food and water.

Our aim when preparing for the hike was to carry as little as possible. Since we were bringing our tent and all the other things necessary for camping (sleeping bags, roll mats, cooking stove, gas, food etc.) it simply wasn’t possible to carry a load of extra unnecessary stuff - just the bare essentials. Here’s what we considered them to be…
  • Tent
  • String and rope/cord
  • 2 x inflatable roll mats
  • 2 x Sleeping bags
  • 2 x Torches + spare batteries for each
  • 2 x Swiss army Penknives (Victorinoxcamper knife Victorinox Mini Champ )
  • 2 x Travel Towels
  • First aid kit (in plastic bag) (including: paracetamol, ibuprofen, Imodium (to buy), re-hydration sachets (to buy), plasters, savlon, antiseptic wipes, bandages, hayfever tables etc.)
  • Water purification tables (x 90)

  • 11 x Maps for whole GR10
  • 2 x Offical GR10 guides
  • Walking Poles (2 for Sara)
  • Wallet (x1) – bank cards, cash, cheques

Sara’s electronic stuff
  • Phone - used mostly as a camera
  • Spare phone battery and power pack

  • Underwear (3 pairs each)
  • Socks (3 pairs each)
  • 1 pair of hiking shorts each
  • 3 t-shirts each
  • Merino wool top + Purple leggings for me
  • Trouser/shorts for Gavin
  • Fleece each
  • Scarf/snood, Hat + gloves each
  • Hair ties and Kirby grips
  • Waterproof/poncho
  • Sunglasses /cap
  • 2 x Campsite flipflops

(Along the way we also bought an extra layer of thermal clothing when the temperature started to regularly drop below zero high up in the mountains. I also bought a swimsuit for wearing in the many thermal spas along the way.)

Stuff that perhaps wasn’t essential, but was lightweight and (in our opinion) well worth bringing

  • Small binoculars
  • 1 x book each
  • Mp3 player
  • 1 notebook and + 2 pens for keeping a diary
  • Necklace + bracelet for feeling fancy ;)
